As noted in an earlier article, \u201cblack hat\u201d SEO became popular about a decade ago, and while Google and other search engines have tried to change things so that these tactics don\u2019t work as well, shady SEO practices still abound. On the plus side, however, trends indicate that disingenuous SEO practices are fading out, leaving room for truly quality content to be a major player in SEO in the future. As a result, alternatives have emerged, the most noteworthy being Blekko, which enables users to modify their searches in a wiki-style oversight effort. In this way, shoddy content that is search engine optimized but does not provide substantive value to users will quickly become less relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Although Blekko and others of its kind are still very niche, today\u2019s little search engines that could may become tomorrow\u2019s major players.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Google\u2019s Crackdown on Content Farms Is Just the Beginning<\/h2>\n<p>Only a few months ago, Google took a significant step in response to the dominance of content farms like eHow, Livestrong, Mahalo, and others by tweaking its algorithm. As a result, many of these sites that generated poor, but not terrible, content were ranked lower than usual.<\/p>\n<p>While some Google users claimed that results did not change dramatically, this move represents only the first major step against content that demands attention but has nothing meaningful to say. More changes are likely to follow. In fact, in response to Google\u2019s updates, Blekko went even further and completely banned over a million sites from its search engine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Algorithm updates increasingly aim to reward depth, originality, and usefulness rather than sheer volume of content.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Case Study: Content Quality Outperforming SEO Tactics<\/h3>\n<p>A niche blog that previously relied on keyword-heavy articles saw stagnant growth.
